My weekend in nine photos.

Another sure sign of spring is the River Rat Race from Athol to Orange. I have to say that as a radio station, we are honored to be a small part of it. The race is the cornerstone to a big weekend in the North Quabbin area and has been for 59 years. The Athol Lions Club works tirelessly to put this event on. Through challenges in the past years, it moves forward making many area residents proud.

After driving the Bear Country Tahoe in the River Rat Promenade, I set up as I have for many years in what is known as Wally’s yard.

I only know Wally’s first name. And I only see him on River Rat Day. His house is on the west side of the Miller’s River. He lets me use his electricity and provides space to set up some DJ equipment. He invites total strangers into his yard. The world needs more Wallys.

Here is a bit of what the River Rat scene looks like on the west side of the river. On the east side all the paddlers are lined up and awaiting the sound of the cannon which starts the mad dash to Orange. I played some music. I provided a microphone for the national anthem. BTW. This year it was sung by a freshman from Mahar Regional. She did a great job!

Anyhoo, the cannon went off and the paddlers where on their way!

Congratulations to this year’s winners who were the same as last year.

These two are especially good and had the good fortune of drawing the #3 position at the start. There was little doubt of who the winner would be.

A special shout-out to the Athol Lions Club that worked tirelessly on this event and will turn right around and get ready for the 2025 event. It will be the 60th annual!

A special shout-out to Jason and the River Rat Patrol who made me an honorary member of their team!

Saturday night I was in a mean card game.

Ever play Skip-Bo?  I live with some serious players.

Sunday morning it was time for a long run as I prepare for the WMASS Mother’s Day Half Marathon.

I felt pretty good after 7 miles. I am pretty happy with where I am right now in regard to training. I need to get my pledge #’s up though. You can help here and remember all pledges go to the Cancer Connection in Northampton.

Late Sunday morning I headed to New Hampshire Motor Speedway to see some racing! Some of our favorite locals were competing like Tommy Carey of New Salem.

And Cole Littlewood of Orange.

I am excited for the racing season to begin in earnest. The first Checkered Flag Report is this Saturday morning at 10AM.

I hope you had a good weekend! -Kevin
