H.S. Football Week One Recap: Franklin Tech, Greenfield, Frontier post impressive wins

ATHOL, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The 2026 local high school football season opened with four games involving local teams over Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and wrapping up on Saturday night in Athol.

The Franklin Tech Eagles have been on the receiving end of a lot of preseason discussion about the top local teams this year. The Eagles came out of the shoot quickly and rolled to a 38-0 victory over McCann Tech in Turners Falls.

Running back Brady Gancarz and quarterback Mason Bassett each rushed for two touchdowns, and Bassett added a touchdown pass in the victory.

Greenfield also looked good in its opener, as the Green Wave went to Chicopee and knocked off the Pacers, 24-12 at Szot Park.

Saturday afternoon, the Mahar Senators fell at home to Smith Vocational, 26-20, while Athol lost at home Saturday night to Frontier, 36-0.
