New, lower rates coming for Greenfield Light & Power customers

GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) —  Greenfield Light & Power, the city’s group electricity buying program, will provide participants with lower electricity prices starting January 2026 as a new 3-year contract begins.

The program will continue to provide 100% renewable electricity, however there will only be two program options as opposed to three; Local Green, supplying renewable energy from New England and Budget Green, which is a new mix of renewable energy sourced from New England and outside the region.

From the City of Greenfield:

Lower Greenfield Light & Power prices starting in January 2026

Prices for Greenfield Light & Power, Greenfield’s municipal group electricity buying program, will fall for all participants starting in January 2026. The price change will come as the current electricity supply contract with First Point Power ends and a new contract with First Point Power takes effect, bringing nearly three years of stable prices.

Under the new contract with First Point Power, Greenfield Light & Power will continue to provide electricity that is 100% from renewable sources for all participants. To balance cost with sustainability, as well as reflect changes in the renewable market, more of that electricity will come from renewable energy sources outside of New England for most participants, and the program offerings will change from three to two options.

“I am excited to announce this reduction in electricity prices,” said Mayor Virginia Desorgher. “While small, this price cut comes at a time when everything seems to be getting more expensive, including electricity in many places. It’s a reminder of the success of the Greenfield Light & Power program.”

Prices under the new contract will be as follows:

Budget Green – 100% renewable electricity from a mix of sources both within and outside of New England for a price of 13.090 ¢/kWh, which is lower than both the current Standard price of 13.498 ¢/kWh and the current Budget price of 13.183 ¢/kWh.

Local Green – 100% renewable electricity from within the New England region for a price of 15.644 ¢/kWh, which is lower than the current Local Green price of 15.717 ¢/kWh.

The new Budget Green price is also lower than Eversource’s current Basic Service prices, which are in effect through January 31. However, because Eversource’s prices change and their future prices are unknown, future savings cannot be guaranteed.

Both the Budget Green and the Local Green prices will be fixed for 34 months from January 2026 until November 2028.

The drop in prices builds on the program’s history of providing measurable value to the community. Since launching in 2015, Greenfield Light & Power has saved participants more than $7.9 million compared with Eversource’s Basic Service prices. In addition, Greenfield Light & Power has also reduced the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 268 million pounds of CO2, which is equivalent to avoiding the emissions associated with driving more than 309.5 million miles in an average passenger vehicle.

No action is required for current Greenfield Light & Power participants. Participants currently enrolled in the Standard and Budget options will automatically transition to the Budget Green option under the new contract. Participants currently enrolled in the Local Green option will remain enrolled in the Local Green option. The new prices will first appear on February 2026 Eversource electric bills. Active program participants will receive a notice about the changes from the City in November.

Participants may choose a different program option or leave the program before the new contract takes effect, and at any time in the future, with no fee or penalty.

To enroll, make changes to enrollment, or get more information, electricity customers in Greenfield are encouraged to visit the program website at GreenfieldLightAndPower.com or contact customer support with
