GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Tonight, the Greenfield City Council will consider an unexpected funding request to repair the DPW Transfer Station concrete floor.

Ways & Means Committee met Tuesday night to discuss the issue with Mayor Desorgher and DPW Director Paul Newell, who explained that after decades of slow deterioration caused by normal wear, the floor is now fractured and in need of repair.

Committee members voted unanimously in support of an amended repair cost of $550,000, down from the proposed $800,000.

Ways and Means Committee member Wid Perry asked questions regarding the timeline of the deterioration and whether the repairs would address the issues in construction and use that led to the need for repairs. DPW Director Newell said that while the deterioration happened over a long period of time, it has recently been in a state that has hindered the work at the transfer station and requires immediate attention.

Mayor Desorgher confirmed the need to address the floor and also mentioned a rat issue, which she will speak more on at tonight’s City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the John Zon Community Center and via Zoom.
